Horse + Rider Sessions

You and your horse share a beautiful connection and this is where we get to show off that bond and celebrate all that your horse means to you. We’ll make beautiful photographs you can enjoy in numerous ways and for many years.

Equine Portrait Sessions

An artistic focus on the beauty of the horse. The alert ears, intelligent eyes, soft curve of the back, strong neck. These are horse only sessions so we can focus on your horse’s beauty. Braided manes are highly recommended.

“ I had the pleasure of working with Jill for a photography session with my two horses… a Paint and a Clydesdale.  I was impressed with her patience, making sure the horses weren’t stressed.  She had tricks to make them achieve beautiful poses that enhanced their beauty.  She used a variety of backgrounds and it was very difficult to pick the best… they all were.  Can’t imagine anything better!

Questions You May Have About a Portrait Session…

Once you book the session I’ll send you a guide with some tips for getting your horse ready which will include a little refresher on ground work to help. But don’t worry. We have tricks for getting pictures of even the most fidgety horses!
I’m with you! I often feel the same way about having my picture taken. But don’t worry. I’ll give you tips and make suggestions as we go so you know exactly what to do and you'll look natural.
Most sessions take place at the barn where the horse lives and feels most comfortable. In our pre session call we’ll talk about your barn so we have a plan before we start.
You’d be amazed at how many spots we’ll be able to find to take amazing photos at your barn. We’ll discuss your location during our pre session call and I’ll get there early the day of the shoot to scout out the best places depending on light and location.
First and foremost you want to wear something comfortable. After you book your session I’ll send you a guide to help you prepare. In it you'll find a section on wardrobe inspiration and hair and makeup suggestions.
That’s totally up to you depending on the look you like best. If your session includes a black background I strongly recommend braiding the mane. The tail is optional. Some people like to and others leave it natural.
I recommend the session take place about 2 hours before sunset to capture the most beautiful light.
We’ll touch base the day before and the day of the session. If it looks like it will rain we’ll reschedule. If it rains during the shoot and we can’t take all the pictures we want I’ll come back on another day so we can get all the pictures you want.
Some people like pictures of their horse in a bridle and and others prefer a nice halter. Either will work and they'll look best if cleaned. If using a halter I suggest a black or brown leather lead without a chain. No worries if you don't have one. I have one if needed.
Shoot and burn sessions are usually provided by a photographer who takes photos and then burns JPGs to a USB, hands it to the client and then is done. This is akin to a fast food restaurant where they can serve many people with a limited menu of medium to low quality products. The client then takes the USB to print images and often finds the pictures need to be adjusted, color corrected or exposure adjusted.

A full service photographer approaches the session differently and wants the customer to have a customized experience, offers quality products and plans the session with the customer to ensure beautiful images that are professionally edited and thoughtfully made into a quality product. This full service experience is like fine dining where everything is individually prepared for the customer and quality is chosen over quantity.
Digital files for social media sharing are included in each package. I sell the digital files for printing separately and it can be added to your package. This is done because I find customers usually don't need them once they realize they can order prints at a comparable price through a trusted printer I use. This allows me to check for correct color and cropping to ensure you are happy with the images you print.

Once your session is booked I’ll provide you with a guide to help you get ready for the session. No matter what you choose, the most important thing is that you’re comfortable and you feel like you!

One or two outfits is perfect for the Essentials session. The others sessions allow time for more outfits so you have a lot of different looks.
